8th Blue-March 12-13

YBA Xtreme Blue vs. Irish
Saturday 3/12/11 2:25 p.m. YBA squared off against the Irish losing 54 -34. First half was great YBA competed.  Second half saw the guards failing to secure the ball, too many turnovers and failure to execute and make smart decisions on offense. Also the team needs to be practice against presses and run the press break offense and come to passes.  Keys for improvement from this game: ball security, offensive execution, run the press break offense and make better decisions.
  • Defense player of the game:   Garret Thomas, Hunter Konrad (on the boards)
  • Offense player of the game: none
  • Best Hustle:  Garret Thomas, Hunter Konrad (on the boards)

YBA Xtreme Blue vs. Jr. Minors – Loss  45 - 31
Sunday 3/13/11 10:05 a.m. YBA squared off against and beat the Minors 45 -31. YBA came out with great energy and play solid aggressive defense in this one.  Offensive execution was solid and the whole team really left it all out on the floor in this one a great effort from the whole team.  The bigs did a nice job rebounding on both ends of the floor.  Keys for improvement from this game: ball security, offensive decision making and execution, clearing the ball quicker on the defensive glass.
  • Defense player of the game:   Garett Thomas
  • Offense player of the game: Ryan Rivas
  • Best Hustle:  Garret Thomas, Hunter Konrad (on the boards)

YBA Xtreme Blue vs.  – CRR Black
Sunday 3/13/1 12:15 p.m.YBA squared off against CRR and lost 45 -25.  YBA came out with good energy but settled for quick poor shots on offense which the opponent turned into transition baskets.  Offensively, as a team decision making continued to be poor settling for quick outside 3’s that missed and the opponent extended its lead.  YBA seemed to quit in this one long faces and no attentiveness in the time outs lack of hustle for loose balls and failure to execute the offense.  You can blame the coach but players play and execute no matter the circumstance effort can always be there it simply was not in this one.  Keys for improvement from this game: ball security, offensive decision making and execution (when the outside shot is not going look inside), and a stronger will to compete.
  • Defense player of the game:  Hunter Konrad, Garett Thomas (on the boards)
  • Offense player of the game: none
  • Best Hustle:   Hunter Konrad, Garett Thomas (on the boards)
  • Best Attitude: Zach Green, Ish Oganesyan (for the 1st half)

YBA Xtreme White vs. Davis Wildcats
Saturday 3/12/11 at 1:20 p.m.YBA squared off against Davis winning 46 - 21.  With 5 new players everyone did an excellent job playing together and adjusting to the new chemistry which will take some time to gel.  Good patience on offense, solid man defense and winning the battle on the boards at both ends of the floor for the majority of the game allowed us to pull away and retain the lead in this one. Keys for improvement from this game: finish off transition baskets, maintain perimeter spacing on offense, look for the screener who is rolling, screener roll, boxing out on defense, and seeing back side cutters on defense.
  • Defense player of the game:  whole team
  • Offense player of the game: Sanam Bains, Josh O’neal
  • Best Hustle: the whole team
  • Best Attitude: the whole team
YBA Xtreme White vs. Redding Hornets (Eventual Tourn Champs)
Saturday 3/12/11 at 4:35 p.m.YBA squared off against Redding and lost 73-35.  This was a formidable opponent a very solid team and definitely felt it shooting a very high % from the floor.  Our guard play struggled to secure the ball and get offensive penetration. Otherwise our effort was excellent and we won the 4th quarter so I was very proud of our heart in this one.  Keys for improvement from this game: ball security, offensive execution, finish off transition baskets, maintain perimeter spacing on offense, getting back quicker in transition defense, boxing out on defense.

  • Defense player of the game:   whole team for 4th qtr effort
  • Offense player of the game: Stephen Bober
  • Best Hustle: whole team
  • Best Attitude: whole team

YBA Xtreme White vs. Hurricanes White
Sunday 3/13/11 at 2:25 p.m. YBA squared off against and beat the Hurricanes 56 -35. YBA came out very flat but played through the sluggishness and with good ball movement on offense and cleaning up the glass on the defensive end out of our 2 -3 zone which proved to be effective we took and retained the lead. At times our decision making on the offensive end was poor settling for low percentage shots which allowed the Hurricanes to hang around but in the second half we cleaned up our offensive execution utilizing the high post to low post and inside out aspects of our offense very effectively.  Keys for improvement: come out with more intensity, improve fist, improve ball security (reduce turnovers better passing decisions), offensive and ob play execution (better decision making), come to passes.
  • Defense player of the game: Cody Abendschein, Spencer Wirth, Josh O’neal
  • Offense player of the game:  Jesse Savage, Sanam Bains
  • Best Hustle:  Jermaine Washington, Cody Abendschein, Spencer Wirth, Josh O’neal, Jesse
                            Savage, Stephen Bober
  • Best Attitude:  Cody Abendschein, Josh O’neal

4th Grade-March 12-13

What an exciting weekend.  We started off the weekend with a hard fought victory against the Folsom Force.  The Force stayed with us all game. We made some mistakes taking care of the ball and they made us pay.  Finally we were able to use our size and speed to get them into foul trouble and sank some key free throws in the fourth allowing us to walk away with a not so easy 13 point win.

Our next game we played the Davis Wildcats.  All 10 players on the team saw some good playing time in this game.  It was nice to have a game where we could get all the boys some good playing time.  We played good defense and our offense was clicking.  I was a little concerned as we had a 7 hour break in between games.  The boys did not disappoint.  They played great.

This set up the final game against the Redding Hornets.  Both teams were undefeated along with the Dawgs.  We knew we were going to be in for a fight.  Our offense was not clicking as we missed countless layups, but we relied on our defense.  This was the finest defensive effort I have seen from an Xtreme team PERIOD!  We ended up winning the game by scoring only 21 points and giving up 19 points.  Our boys did great keeping their emotions in check even after a “controversial” late game technical was called (Ooops!).  I want to call out Matt Sonlone for his break from the huddle.  He kept it simple, “Composure on three.”  Well said Matt.  Our team responded much as it did the entire game with a great defensive effort to finish the game off and earn their championship tie with their Dawgs brothers.

Great job this weekend boys!  I have never been around a team this young that has had this type of composure.  The development of this team is right where I wanted it.  We are well on our way to peaking or Reno in May.  I told the kids to enjoy their championship for Sunday, but we are going to forget about come Monday at 5pm.  We have a very busy week as we will be learning a new defense and getting more in depth into our offense.  Coach Jesse and I will continue to keep pushing the kids to learn as much as they possibly can in the coming months.

3rd Grade-March 12-13

Team faced off against a tough FEBA Red Team. Having played the team in the past, and going 1-1 with them, it was sure to be a battle. The team played very well, and stayed tough throughout the game, but in the end came up one point short. With the ball on the baseline with four seconds left and down by one, the team learned the importance of execution. Nevertheless, it was a great game and the boys came out with their heads high.

The second game was against a scrappy 916 Select team. Still feeling the sting of a one point loss, the team decided to put their offensive skills to work. Passing the ball well and tough defense led to a double digit win.

Coming out strong against a quick and talented CJBA team, the Xtreme players traded baskets the whole way. A few VERY WELL EXECUTED in bounds plays that did not result in a basket were the keys to another one point loss.

Over all, the team went 1-2 for the weekend, but the improvement in how the kids are playing is very evident. The coaches are very proud of all of the players and how they handled themselves in the wake of two close games.
