YBA Xtreme White vs. Davis Wildcats White
Saturday 4/2/11 at 3:30 p.m. at William Jessup University YBA squared off against and beat the Davis Wildcats White 52-40.  YBA came out with good energy. However we kept the game close for 3 quarters failing to close out on shooters, making careless passes that lead to turnovers and failing to be disciplined and run our offense with proper offensive spacing.  Understandable with our new roster chemistry takes time. It took until the later part of the 4th quarter but aggressive rebounding, defense and good transition ball movement allowed us to score in transition and extend our lead. Solid team effort. Keys for improvement from this game: get off to a quicker start on offense with better decisions, finish off transition baskets and lay ups, maintain perimeter spacing on offense, look for the screener who is rolling, screener roll more aggressively, boxing out on defense, and contesting all shots on defense.
  • Defense player of the game:  Cody Abendschein, John Voter, Josh O’neal on boards
  • Offense player of the game: Jade Sotelo, John Voter (passing/vision), Josh O’neal on boards
  • Best Hustle: Jade Sotelo
  • Best Attitude: Cody Abendschein, John Voter
YBA Xtreme White vs. Davis Hotshots
Sunday 4/3/11 at 9:00 a.m.YBA squared off against and beat the Davis Hotshots 46-40.  The score makes this one look closer than it was a few late 3’s.  Fortunately the clock was on our side we failed to close this one out.  This was not the same Hotshots team we lost to in overtime much weaker.  For Sunday at 9 a.m. we came out with better energy than we have in past Sunday morning games. We again got off to a slow start unable to convert early and we made poor decisions in transition and on offense and did not run our offense which allowed them to hang around.  With the addition of the 3 point line if you let teams hang around you can lose lots of games you should not and you may let it come down to a referee’s judgement call which may not be in your favor and you lose falling pray to what is known in the world of athletic competition as an upset and these stay with you for life.  We gave back a double digit lead when our bench was not able to maintain the lead we had.  Hustle on the offensive boards, defense and rebounding kept us in this game. We need to pass the ball more effectively in our transition offense too much full court dribbling and too many homerun type passes they become turnovers. A win is a win we learn what we can and move on.  Keys for improvement from this game: closing out games we clearly should win and maintaining that lead, better decisions and passing in transition, offensive execution run our offense, finish off transition baskets, maintain perimeter spacing on offense, boxing out on defense.

  • Defense player of the game:   Matt Dzwilewski, Cody Abendschein, John Voter, Josh O’neal
                                                          on boards
  • Offense player of the game: Matt Dzwilewski
  • Best Hustle: Jade Sotelo
  • Best Attitude: Cody Abendschein, John Voter

YBA Xtreme White vs. Sierra Sonics
Sunday 4/3/11 at 11:10 a.m. YBA squared off against and beat the Sierra Sonics 53-41.  We came out with good energy but again failed to run the offense early in the game and again settled for homerun poor passes in transition that lead to turnovers often sailing way over everyone’s head and out of bounds.  This in turn allowed a much weaker opponent to hang around and think they were in the game.   The bench played commendably in this game and ran the offense better than the starters and actually scored several baskets out of the set.  This one was a little sloppy but the better athleticism won out in the end with hustle on the boards and aggressive ball pressure. A win is a win we learn what we can and move on. Keys for improvement: come out and run the offense, improve ball security (reduce turnovers better passing decisions), offensive and ob play execution (run them as drawn up), finish inside on offense.
  • Defense player of the game: Cody Abendschein,  Josh O’neal, John Voter
  • Offense player of the game:  Stephen Bober, Jade Sotelo and Josh O’neal running Kentucky high screen and role in 4th nice job, Gavin Triplett running the offense in the 4th quarter
  • Best Hustle:  John Voter, Jade Sotelo, Jesse Savage on the boards
  • Best Attitude:  The Bench (good support ready to play when called on)

7th Grade White-April 2-3

This weekend we went 1-2, but it is by far the most encouraging tournament we've played, as we smashed the Reno ballers 56-26! The 30 point margin of victory is the largest in 7th grade xtreme history, that's how you ball white team keep it up!!! We also had 2 close games that we were competetive in, & our total points scored/ allowed was +19 points despite going 1-2 for the tournament. I expect us to improve on that record in the next tournament.
In a side note for the white team, Garret Smith has a broken thumb and will be out until early May, not too long, get well quickly and we will be anxiously awaiting your return to play!
We have done a great job of improving individually and as a team. I fully expect us to win a tournament before the Reno Trip. We were led this weekend by Mitch Matthews, Garret Smith, Ryan Pham and Sam Zanola. A key to our improvement has been the improved contributions of the whole team. Everyone on our team is a valued contributor and we wouldn't have won on Sunday without Trent Ausmus' great Defense. Continue to work hard and put in the extra effort and we will continue to improve. I am pleased with our current path. Everyone played a significant role at one or another in every game, and we showed excellent passing too.
I look forward to seeing who will rise up next..

5th Grade White-April 2-3

Facing a CJBA team that had beaten us by 28 the in the last tournament, the boys were excited to get even.  Once again CJBA jumped on us quickly and we struggled with their full court zone press and were down 13 to 4 at the end of 1. Nevertheless a tenacious defensive effort cut the margin to 19-23 at half-Harmon Khela (5 steals) and RJ Billena (6 steals).  Some suspicious officiating and scorekeeping caused a 9 point margin at the end of the third to turn into a 13 point margin before the boys could take the court. Although we lost 31-51, it was a strong effort and the boys learned valuable lessons about sportsmanship.

In the consolation bracket we squared off against the Hornets. Harmon Khela (23 rebounds) and James Crump (6 rebounds) dominated the boards inside and helped us jump out to a 6 point lead in the first half. Leading by 8 points heading into the 4th confidence was high-but our inexperience showed and we panicked against their trapping full court press and an 8 point lead turned into a 37 to 23 loss. The team was led by Captain Harmon Khela’s 9 points, 23 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 Block.

In the final game of the weekend we faced the Red Raiders. Our full court man press helped the boys jump out to an early lead-Shamus Burmeister (4 steals), Noah Slate (4 steals), and RJ Billena (4 steals). Harmon Khela (10 rebounds) and Zack Book (8 rebounds) controlled the boards in the third and we took a 5 point lead into the last quarter. Late turnovers allowed the Red Raiders to tie the game at the end of regulation. In overtime our shots didn’t go and we lost 28-29. The boys learned a valuable lesson about what happens to teams shooting 25% from the free throw line in close games.

6th Grade Blue-April 2-3

Saturday

Game#1The boys came out strong.  Eric Lundy had a great first game.  He came out and set the tone.  Austin and Grant played well with great defense.  Eric Mack played great defense and offense also.  We won that first game. Great win guys.

Sunday

Game #2We came out a little flat, but slowly gained momentum.  Everyone played great as a team. We ran our sets, rebounded and overall had a great game.  This win took us to the Championships.

Game #3We finally found a way to stay together.  We had a slow start, but once we found the way to pull together we got the win.  Awesome Job Guys!!
