Varsity Team-Week 1

The YBA varsity Xtreme team was in a tournament this past weekend at hardwood and took third. In their first game Saturday, the team coasted to victory win over the Lodi Flying Tigers. Everyone shared the ball extremely well and they all had solid games both on offense and defense. In the second game they played Team E-time hoops and in an intense overtime situation, they came up just short. There was tremendous effort by all the players. Antony , Lawrence Wright, and Alex Webber had big games. Alex Webber and Jesse Posehn hit shots that were needed while Najee Burge Played good defense bring in some big rebounds. For their final game, they beat Vacaville Christian by 2 points to take third. Everyone stepped it up tremendously. Darrell Polee and Alex Webber hand a great game on both ends of the court. Jesse Posehn and Anthony Pimentel were solid in all the different positions they were asked to play. While Lawrence wright controlled the tempo of the game, after a rough Patch in the third quarter of the game. All in all this was good weekend and everyone played outstanding.
Coaches Final Thought
I am so proud of what we were able to do with two very short practices. This team will continue to get better with time and hard work. We are looking forward to this week's tournament were we will really test what we will be able to do.

8th Grade Tournament and Competitive Teams-Week 1

This Sunday the YBA XTREME 8th Grade Tournament and Competitive Teams played strong, with both games being high scoring and almost tied, showing the strength and potential of these players. The boys worked hard and showed focus as they learned new plays and hands signals during the games and demonstrated good attitudes when given constructive correction.

The boys were reminded that good players don’t just happen, and if they want to be good, they have to want it and work for it, taking advantage of every opportunity, including all the training sessions offered through the program, as well as training and practicing at home and at the gym.

Please help encourage our players to be the best they can be, on and off the court!

Go Xtreme!!

7th Grade Team-Week 1

I'd like to start by saying welcome to the YBA -X family, we are happy that you are here! I am very excited by the all the enthusiastic and hard working young men and women that have entered the program. I look forward to spending the next session and beyond with you all. I love the effort, energy, and positive attitudes that I have seen so far.

So as for my 7th grade group, I want to say that I am happy with the progress we've made in the short amount of time we've been together. I was pleased with our effort level & team spirit. We are heading in the right direction, keep your attitudes up and continue to work hard and we will have success. I want you all to keep in mind that team success comes when an individual places the team's goals in front of the individuals goals. We must continue to improve not only athletically, but more importantly your basketball IQ.

Anticipation leads to recognition,
Recognition leads to reaction,
Reaction leads to execution. "

6th Grade Comp/Tournament Team-Week 1

The 6th grade Xtreme Comp and Tournament teams put on a good show this Sunday.  J Kim Porras led his team against the 5th grade YBA dawgs team to victory. He did some great scoring, rebounding, and defense.  He also did nice no-look passing.  Carter Smith was surprisingly rugged by offensively rebounding the ball all day.

There were also the bruising inside plays of Taylor Ittner.  Then we had the great open court guard play of Darren Baker with some of his exciting drives to the basket.  We also had our sweeper, Kaes Emert who went on a couple of scoring runs.  Lastly, I can't forget the steady smooth point guard play of Jacob Renard.

Overall, it was a great day of basketball for my 6th graders.  All the boys played hard and applied what they had been taught. Most importantly, I feel they all had a lot of fun!

5th Grade Tournament-Week 1

YBA 5th comp vs 4th grade

The kids did great in there first official game. For the team not knowing each other and only having one practice with no sets of plays they lost on a buzzer beater to a good dawgs 4th grade team. I think this 5th grade has alot of potential and with great workouts/ practices we will see the improvement fast.

YBA Xtreme vs 6th grade
The boys played great in the 1st quarter down only by 2 points to the 6th grade xtreme team. I thought just like the comp team the kids played great for only having one practice. I thought the team played great, the one thing I have stressed and will stressed to the team is not one player will win this game for us its a TEAM effort and I thought for playing kids a year older we had alot of possitives from the game that we can build on I saw us go from down 16 in the 4th to bring it to 7 that shows alot of character and desire to not give up. I'm looking forward to working with this group and the practices coming up.

5th Grade Competitive Team-Week 1

The 5th. grade Competitive team played their first game on Sunday against the 4th. grade tournament team and did a very good job! Although we lost the game in the last 7 seconds of the game, the boys played hard and as a team. With only one practice under our belt and no true point guard, we managed to play very competitively with the 4th. grade team which had several YBA DAWGS playing for them. I was proud of Colin and James Sweet for stepping up and taking on the point guard position, neither of them ever playing it before. Mathias was a monster on the boards and was always in great position for the rebounds and put backs. James C. helped the point guards on defense and bringing the ball up the floor, a first for him too! Shamus played everywhere and never backed down to the physical play of their bigs. Harmon came late but he showed up in the 3rd. and 4th. quarter with 10 points! Harmon got physical, posted up and asked for the ball. He played hard and energized his team! Lets keep working on our fundamentals and work hard in practices and we will keep getting better! Keep up the good work!

4th Grade Team- Week 1

What a great first full week in YBA-Xtreme! The 4th grade team learned a TON! We learned a basic 2-3 zone defense, man to man defense complete with weak side help, our 3 out 2 in motion offense, a basic 2-2-1 full court press and our press break offense. WOW! That’s quite a lot for 9 and 10 year old boys to learn. I put a lot on the table for the kids to learn this week and they more than met the challenge.

Noah had never played any of these except the man to man defense. He really stepped up in practice this week to absorb what he was given. Garrett worked hard and had great focus at practice this week. Zeki was one of our most dedicated workers this week in practice, and it showed. The boys found out how much energy it takes to press the entire game. Zeki was a leader in showing the team how to give 100% effort 100% of the time!

We had a great day as a team this Sunday in our first instructional games. The boys not only learned a lot this week in practice, but more importantly, they were able to apply what they learned in their games. Hot NBA range shooting by Josh got us out to a quick start against a very good and experienced 5th grade team. Shane really battled the bigger stronger 5th graders. He was able to come up with some great rebounds and played good interior defense. Nathan, Chase and Vince made the opposition work HARD to get the ball up the floor. I felt our press is what made it possible for us to win this game. Ryan had some great shots and had a good feel for passing the ball. We really worked on spacing on offense this week and Sava was asked to play a couple positions he hadn’t practiced. He did a great job filling those roles and being coached on the fly. And how can I forget about Spencer. I asked Spencer to run the point a few times, and he did a super job! Spencer has a great feel for the game and made all the right passes. What a great example of teamwork to end the first game. Trailing by 1 with 7.6 seconds left, Nathan stole the ball, provided an outlet to Josh, Josh pushed the ball up the court and fired a perfect pass to Vince streaking up the floor, who converted the layup for the game winner. This type of trust in your teammates usually doesn’t occur this fast. I’m so proud of how the team kept their composure and how they never ever gave up. The 5th grade team is a well coached team with some terrific players. Each team deserves a pat on the back. It was a well played game. Thank you to all the competitors.

The late game provided a good opportunity to work on both our offensive and defensive sets. The boys knew not to take the well coached 3rd grade tournament team lightly. Our boys played hard all game. Zeki and Spencer were constantly able to penetrate and many times made excellent passes to open players.

I’m really proud of all our boys this week. I set high expectations for each and every one of these boys and they did everything that was asked of them. Please take a moment to really congratulate your son on his focus, effort and performance this week. We have another tough schedule this week. We’ll be training for the first time, and I will be layering onto what we have already learned. Remember our team motto, “100%, 100% of the Time.” All of our boys LIVED that motto this week. I’ll be asking they do the same going forward as I now know they are capable of doing so!

I’m so excited for what lies ahead for not only our team, but the entire YBA-Xtreme program. I stayed at the Hardwood facility all day Sunday and watched every level of basketball. What a wonderful group of coaches and kids we have assembled. I observed quite a bit of coaching and teaching going on in each and every game. You simply cannot find that level of basketball education in the area.

My favorite part of our first full week was seeing all the smiles on the boys’ faces. That is what it is ALL about at the end of the day!

3rd Grade Tournament and Competitive Teams-Week 1

The third grade program is off to a great start!

The Sunday competitive games will be great for all players (Tournament and Competitive) as they make the transition from the rec leagues to the competitive environment.

The 3rd grade tournament team did a wonderful job against a mixed 4th grade tournament/competitive team.  For a full half, they hung right in there. Then, the kids were taught something they've never done before - a zone defense - and it showed.  They struggled with the concept, but will get better with practice.  I didn't expect miracles in 10 minutes of instruction.

All of the players fought hard and gave it their all, and though they lost, there was great benefits that came out of the game.  Word is they may get another shot at the 4th graders again.

The 3rd grade competitive team also did a great job!  They hustled up and down the court while also getting used to the competitive games.  I saw "signs of greatness" from all players, and it is exciting to know the players they can become with hard work and discipline.

After the game, I took the 3rd grade competitive team aside and we worked a little more on the zone defense concept.  I saw some wheels turning, and it clicked for a few players.  This is encouraging!

I am excited to teach and mentor this age group, and look forward to seeing all of the progress that lies ahead for both teams and all players!
