8th Grade Blue-April 9-10

Great Season Xtreme Blue everyone improved over the course of the season so focus on that not this tough final weekend against some very solid opponents.

YBA Xtreme Blue vs. Rocktown Ballers
Saturday 4/9/11 11:10 a.m. YBA lost 47-27. YBA came out with great energy. The team started off well but struggled with shooting % and decision making. Lack of ball movement and slow rotation
on defense put Rocktown on the free throw line in the 2nd quarter. Lack of help side defense on the post hurt us through out the game. Rocktown was simply the better team today. Keys for improvement from this game: ball security, offensive execution, post defense, press break execution, make better decisions, take higher percentage shots.

YBA Xtreme Blue vs. Seasides Finest
Saturday 4/9/11 1:20 p.m. YBA lost 41-23. YBA didn’t play ball pressure defense, rebound or execute on the offensive end in this one. In the end too many poor decisions and too many turnovers lead to the loss. Seaside was simply the better team today. Keys for improvement from this game: ball security, offensive execution, post defense, press break execution, make better decisions, take higher percentage shots.

YBA Xtreme Blue vs.  – NBH Renegades
Sunday 4/10/11 at 11:10 a.m.YBA lost 41 -24.  Coming off two losses YBA came out with good energy but were not able execute on the offensive end in this one. In the end too many poor decisions and too many turnovers lead to the loss in addition to not boxing out and rebounding. NBH was simply the better team today. Keys for improvement from this game: ball security, offensive execution, post defense, press break execution, make better decisions, Boxing out and rebounding, defending pick and role, take higher percentage shots, finish at the basket.

Nice season overall all players improved this season nice job.

YBA Xtreme White vs. Ukiah Warriors
Saturday 4/9/11 at 5:40 p.m. at Rocklin High YBA squared off against and beat the Ukiah Warriors 63-44.  YBA came out with good energy but gave up some early transition baskets. It took until the later part of the second half but aggressive rebounding, defense and good transition ball movement allowed us to score in transition and put this one away. Solid team effort. Keys for improvement from this game: get off to a quicker start on offense with better decisions, finish off transition baskets and lay ups, maintain perimeter spacing on offense, look for the screener who is rolling, screener roll more aggressively, boxing out on defense, and contesting all shots on defense.
  • Defense player of the game:  Cody Abendschein, John Voter, Josh O’neal on boards
  • Offense player of the game:  John Voter (passing/vision), Stephen and Jesse
  • Best Hustle: Team
  • Best Attitude: Cody Abendschein, John Voter
YBA Xtreme White vs. Sierra Sonics   (Special thanks to JB for helping us nice job)
Sunday 4/10/11 at 10:05 a.m.YBA squared off against and fell to Sierra 49-46. I would call this an upset.  After a slow start Sunday mornings are tough this was a sloppy back and forth game. YBA opened a lead but failed to maintain solid defensive pressure and failed to control the defensive boards and let Sierra hang around.  YBA was unable to capitalize on some solid interior offensive looks and solid offensive sets and simply could not get the ball in the basket for long stretches in this one.  In the end giving the other team hope and letting them hang around well we simply let this one get away.  But we fought hard until the final whistle which was great. Keys for improvement from this game: closing out games we clearly should win and maintaining that lead, better decisions and passing in transition, offensive execution run our offense, finish off transition baskets, maintain perimeter spacing on offense, boxing out on defense.

  • Defense player of the game:   John Voter on a big 55
  • Offense player of the game: none
  • Best Hustle: team
  • Best Attitude: Cody Abendschein, John Voter

YBA Xtreme White vs. Del Oro Jr. Eagles
Sunday 4/10/11 at 3:30 p.m. YBA squared off against and beat Del Oro 34-31.  We came out with good energy but again failed to run the offense early in the game. A little mental hang over from a tough loss in the morning but we competed.  A 2-3 zone proved to be the answer and we were able to gain a lead with some transition baskets and hung on in the final minutes and willed out a win tying for first place in the tournament and ultimately we took 2nd place in a tying system.  So congratulations on 2nd place the team came a long way this season last season the previous team was 1-15. Keys for improvement: come out and run the offense, improve ball security (reduce turnovers better passing decisions), offensive and ob play execution (run them as drawn up), finish inside on offense.
  • Defense player of the game:  Josh O’neal
  • Offense player of the game:  John Voter
  • Best Hustle:  John Voter, Cody Abendschein
  • Best Attitude:  Team - gutted out a win

6th Grade Blue-April 9-10

Saturday:

Game #1

This was a good game.  Very successful. We came out playing good defense. We used our fast break which lead to buckets.  We broke their half court press very well.  We stayed together, ran our offense against their zone wonderfully.  I'm was very proud!!!

Game #2
We played Center again, we did loose but only by about 15 points instead of the 30 plus points like last time.  First quarter we were strong and only down by about 5 points.  Second quarter we had a little bit of a melt down.  In the third quarter we were able to pull it back together and play them even.  In the fourth quarter we definitely out played them and made a great comeback.  If we would have had one more quarter we could have pulled it off.

Sunday:
 Game #3

This was a very hard fought game.  The guys ran their offense really well. They played good man defense.  In the fourth quarter they got stops, and rebounded great.  We just couldn't close the gap.  Great game guys.

6th Grade White-April 9-10

Saturday:

Game #1
The guys did pretty good in this game.  I think they are still a little sleepy when they show up to early games.  Justin played great offense.  He was getting to the basket.  Darnel was getting a lot of blocked shots and rebounding great.  And Julian was getting a ton of steals, which took us to the next level in this game.

Game #2
On offense Logan came in and took over the game.  He had between 20-25 points.  Darnel and Brenden were boxing out and doing some great blocking.  This was a great game.

Sunday:

 Game #3
Coach Philip says he feels that this is one of the best games the guys have played together.  They never gave up and played hard the whole game. Justin really showed a lot of leadership in this game, which loved to see.

This weekend
Best Offense goes to Logan
Best Hustle goes to Julian
Best Defense goes to Darnel and Brenden

Thank you again to all the parents for getting the guys to the games and for your support.

4th Grade-April 9-10

Another weekend full of growth and experience!  We started out the weekend against a very good FEBA 3rd grade team.  We executed on offense and defense flawlessly.  However, we shot about 5% from the field.  No kidding!  This might actually be a little kind.  We missed a lot of open layups and tons of jump shots.  I attribute a lot of this to rushing our shots and a lack of concentration.  The boys were able to pull out a 2 point win thanks to late threes from Zeki and Spencer.

Our second game was against Carson Valley whom we easily beat in our first meeting.  This game was a little different to start.  They added a couple of bigs that helped change the dynamics of their team and we came out shooting poorly again.  We had a discussion about setting your feet and concentrating on the shot.  Do not rush the shot.  We had a 10 point lead at the half and then we caught fire.  Vince, Evan and Ben were dropping in jumpers from all over the place.  We managed to pull away easily behind this great shooting.

Our arch rival was waiting for us in the championship game.  We had split the last two championships.  Our boys came out and played their hearts out.  We executed on offense and defense.  Matt was a BEAST on the boards and was able to convert many baskets off those rebounds.  Great game Matt!  We easily pulled away for another championship.  Great game boys!

Our team is a very emotional team, which can be a double edged sword.  This emotion helps us play with fire, but at times can take us in the wrong direction.  We had a couple of brief instances of that this weekend, but the boys really pulled it together fast and learned a lot.

Thanks for the great weekend,

Coach Mack

3rd Grade-April 9-10

The 3rd grade Xtreme team played in the 4th grade division this past week, and finished the tournament 2-1 and 1-point away from the championship.

The first game was against a new team called HYLO. They only had five players, but across the board, they were bigger and stronger.  Xtreme got down early in the game, and kept hanging around with some scrappy play.   They had to fight for every ball, as they were physically outmanned.  Many fouls were called, resulting in two players from Xtreme and one player from HYLO fouling out.  Doing the math, that left their team with 4 players to play a three minute overtime.  In the end, the YBA team’s hustle and scrappiness paid off, and they walked away with a hard fought win.

YBA-X  faced off against Carson Valley 4th grade for the second time in two weeks, and using a balanced attack, and a swarming defense the team pulled ahead early and didn’t look back. They played a disciplined game, passed the ball well and played an all around good game going into the championship.

The championship game was against the FEBS Bulldogs Red team from Folsom.  History tells us that this was sure to be a close game, as every game has been decided by three points or less.  The YBA-X team got down early by as many as nine points, and with an adjustment made on defense, they were able to fight their way back to within four points with the time winding down.  The difference in the game became the free throws.  FEBA was very good from the line, and the YBA-X team struggled.  In the end, a 30 foot bank shot at the buzzer was not enough and the team lost by one point.

Overall, the team had a great tournament and has nothing to be discouraged about. They have come a long way from our first tournament as a team, and show great signs of being a great team.
