The 3rd grade Xtreme team played in the 4th grade division this past week, and finished the tournament 2-1 and 1-point away from the championship.
The first game was against a new team called HYLO. They only had five players, but across the board, they were bigger and stronger. Xtreme got down early in the game, and kept hanging around with some scrappy play. They had to fight for every ball, as they were physically outmanned. Many fouls were called, resulting in two players from Xtreme and one player from HYLO fouling out. Doing the math, that left their team with 4 players to play a three minute overtime. In the end, the YBA team’s hustle and scrappiness paid off, and they walked away with a hard fought win.
YBA-X faced off against Carson Valley 4th grade for the second time in two weeks, and using a balanced attack, and a swarming defense the team pulled ahead early and didn’t look back. They played a disciplined game, passed the ball well and played an all around good game going into the championship.
The championship game was against the FEBS Bulldogs Red team from Folsom. History tells us that this was sure to be a close game, as every game has been decided by three points or less. The YBA-X team got down early by as many as nine points, and with an adjustment made on defense, they were able to fight their way back to within four points with the time winding down. The difference in the game became the free throws. FEBA was very good from the line, and the YBA-X team struggled. In the end, a 30 foot bank shot at the buzzer was not enough and the team lost by one point.
Overall, the team had a great tournament and has nothing to be discouraged about. They have come a long way from our first tournament as a team, and show great signs of being a great team.
