What an exciting weekend. We started off the weekend with a hard fought victory against the Folsom Force. The Force stayed with us all game. We made some mistakes taking care of the ball and they made us pay. Finally we were able to use our size and speed to get them into foul trouble and sank some key free throws in the fourth allowing us to walk away with a not so easy 13 point win.
Our next game we played the Davis Wildcats. All 10 players on the team saw some good playing time in this game. It was nice to have a game where we could get all the boys some good playing time. We played good defense and our offense was clicking. I was a little concerned as we had a 7 hour break in between games. The boys did not disappoint. They played great.
This set up the final game against the Redding Hornets. Both teams were undefeated along with the Dawgs. We knew we were going to be in for a fight. Our offense was not clicking as we missed countless layups, but we relied on our defense. This was the finest defensive effort I have seen from an Xtreme team PERIOD! We ended up winning the game by scoring only 21 points and giving up 19 points. Our boys did great keeping their emotions in check even after a “controversial” late game technical was called (Ooops!). I want to call out Matt Sonlone for his break from the huddle. He kept it simple, “Composure on three.” Well said Matt. Our team responded much as it did the entire game with a great defensive effort to finish the game off and earn their championship tie with their Dawgs brothers.
Great job this weekend boys! I have never been around a team this young that has had this type of composure. The development of this team is right where I wanted it. We are well on our way to peaking or Reno in May. I told the kids to enjoy their championship for Sunday, but we are going to forget about come Monday at 5pm. We have a very busy week as we will be learning a new defense and getting more in depth into our offense. Coach Jesse and I will continue to keep pushing the kids to learn as much as they possibly can in the coming months.
