7th Grade White-March 5-6

The White team played their first tournament of the second session of the year with some new faces on the team. YBA is glad to welcome Ryan Pham, and Malacci Wharry to the YBA Family. We also gladly welcomed back Riley Rosenbrook, who missed most of last session with a lingering heel injury, and Josh Vu who missed last session. We played very well this weekend going 1-2 with a very good performance to start the weekend then some tough "growth" games against teams that were either more experienced or fricking huge! Follow along as I tell the tale..

 

Sat 9 am Rocklin High

Xtreme 54 Hurricanes 44

 

Summary: We started aggressively however we missed 7 close range shots or lay-ups in the 1st quarter and trailed 15-5 after one quarter. We started applying "real" pressure midway through the 2nd and the results were obvious. It was 21-10 hurricanes with 5:30 remaining and we then went on a 17-0 run to end the half. Coming out of Halftime with a 27-21 lead, we never looked back as the run gave us the confidence that we have lacked. This resulted in us pushing the lead all the way up to 14 at one point and we never led by less than 5 points throughout the rest of the game. Mitch Martin came up huge for us with his all out effort Defensively helped spark our run and helped us to maintain our lead. He was constantly around the ball and was consistently getting steals or deflections. He also had a great game passing the ball as he seemed to always make the "right" decision. Other keys were Riley, Garret, Malacci, & Josh who all made at least one 3 point fg. Led by Riley who made 3 3pts including one late in the 4th to stop a run by the hurricanes and seal the win for us.

Xtreme 19 EDH 62

 

Summary: How do you get a terrible score like that you ask? I'll explain for you, we seem to be intimidated by EDH, both teams. We game planned everything that they were going to do before the game, they did exactly what we covered and we simply failed to execute or be in the proper state of mind from the jump ball on as we were never competitive against an EDH team that didn't have all of their "stars" for this game. They took our ball every time we had it and just refused to let us play. We were rattled by their pressure, which was mild at best. We didn't execute our game plan as we continually attempted to dribble through 2 or 3 defenders rather than passing. We didn't box-out, we failed to properly defend their pick and roll offense and we didn't execute our half court offense very well. We missed most of the easy shots that we got, didn't capitalize on our free throws and never got any easy steals for lay-ups. We didn't play our tempo we played their game the whole time and they whomped us. We have to learn that we can't play other team's game, we have to force them to play ours. We must impose our will on the other team & force them to speed up games until they can't keep up. We will learn.

Summary: Facing two 6'2"+ players, and without our only player taller than my 5'9", we again came out intimidated and were in a deep hole for the 3rd game in a row. Unfortunately, we didn't figure out that we could indeed play against giants until it was already too late. We played with tremendous energy and fight from the 2nd quarter on and easily won the 2nd & 3rd quarters, cutting the lead from 25 down to 11 going into the 4th. They came out and won the game in the 4th with 4 big 3pt shots that stomped out the last of our competitive fire for the game. We learned our lessons in the game though, because we made our comeback and got off the mat and fought back after the early blow. We forced them to change what they were doing, we tired them out, we wore them down, we frustrated them, we outworked them, we stood up and if we hadn't spotted them a 15 point lead I'm pretty sure we would've beat them, despite missing Jason Mazure for a family event & losing Joseph Lopes to injury. So with no player taller than 5'6 suited up we still gave Rocktown and their twin towers a battle that they will remember and the coach already professed his admiration for our play after the game by saying "Coach, your team gets after it. There's no way we should've been so uncomfortable with the size your giving up. That's really a credit to your kids and their desire and determination. If you guys had showed up in the 1st we probably would've lost that game" He mentioned how well we attacked their ball-handlers throughout the last 3 quarters and also said that we did a good job keeping them "out of sorts" with our man to man defense. I agree with him completely and will expect more of the same moving forward. Individually we were led by Ryan Pham, who did an excellent job of covering their best player and gave up a good 8". Ryan also did very well on Offense, hitting some tough shots and playing intelligently. Josh, Malacci, Garret, Riley, Chris, Daniel and Trent also played well against the Redwoods national forest team.  We are better than the last 2 scores indicate and will continue to improve and I expect us to have much more success with the team we have now.

Coaches Thoughts:

 

I saw flashes of what we are striving to become. I really like the new players, the new team moving forward will include Josh Vu & Ryan Pham. I like our team top to bottom and feel like we have 10 players who can and will contribute. We showed what we can do the 1st game, and also what can happen to us the other games. We must continue to work hard and improve if we are to build on our limited success so far. We will be losing Chris Hurley as he is moving up to the Blue team, congrats Chris! Malacci Wharry is also Blue team bound... I would like to point out that I have 10 spots on my blue team and only 9 players right now. I would love to see enough improvement from a white team player to be able to move him up as I prefer to suit up 10 players. We are starting to play like we are listening to the coaches and are willing to go and execute the gameplan in actual games! We have taken two steps forward this weekend, we have to continue to move forward! No back-steps! I really like this team, I know we can achieve success! If you want more minutes earn them in practice and then keep them by executing in games!

6th Grade-March 5-6

3rd Grade-March 5-6

Playing in a 4th grade bracket, the YBA-Xtreme 3rd grade team came out strong! They first faced off against a very scrappy team, from Incline. Using tough defense, they struggled with the smaller confines of Court 8, but walked away with the win in the end.

The second game was against a very good 4th grade passing team from Yerington. They found the open man more than once, and took a double digit lead in to the fourth quarter. Though down, the 3rd graders did not back down and battled back to lose the game by six points. The Xtreme team played a great game despite missing many layups and open open shots. They learned that defense can make games interesting.

The final third place game was against cross-town rival Rocktown Ballers 4th graders. Clearly outmatched, physically, the 3rd grade Xtremers had to dig deep in this one. Someone forgot to take the lid off the basket as the team had a hard time putting the ball in the basket. They made just enough shots and played great, hardnosed defense to come out of a low scoring game with a two point win. The lesson learned was if the team could play bad (offensively) and still win, that is a good thing!

Overall, three great games by the team. More than one (actually five) people came to me and said they love how the players are improving ad getting better, and that the improvement is noticeable! As a coach, that is what we are striving for at this age - improvement with each session.  Great job team!!

8th Grade Blue-February 19-20

YBA Xtreme Blue vs. Del Oro Jr. Eagles  49- 42

Saturday 2/19/11 at 10:05 a.m. YBA squared off against and beat a solid Del Oro team.  YBA got off to a solid start in the 1^st half with lots of poise and energy.  Turnovers plagued YBA in the second half but the team didn’t give up and fought hard as a collective team until the final buzzer sounded.  The bench continues to improve and provide quality minutes.  Keys for improvement from this game: finishing off games with early leads, ball security (better decision making and creating better passing lanes to reduce turnovers), coming to passes to prevent turnovers.

YBA Xtreme Blue vs. Folsom Force Red

Saturday 2/19/11 at 1:20 p.m. YBA squared off against and lost to a solid Folsom Force team. YBA came out flat lacking energy, Folsom got off to an early lead able to score in transition too easily.  YBA had too many turnovers and were not making good decisions on the offensive end and defensive intensity was not there early.  YBA picked up it’s intensity in the 4^th quarter but in the end Folsom appeared a step quicker on this day.  Keys for improvement from this game: come out of the gates more intense, reduce turnovers, patience and better decision making on offense, rebound the ball on the defensive end.

YBA Xtreme Blue vs. All Star Predators Gold

Sunday 2/20/11 at 9:00 a.m. YBA squared off against and lost to a solid Predators team. YBA came out more on task in this one able to handle the Predators press and showing good ball movement, decision making and execution on offense.  From 2 quarter on YBA was not able to handle the Predator’s defensive pressure and YBA seemed confused on offense and in bounds plays leading to turnovers and baskets for the Predators that allowed them to extend their lead and win the game.  Keys for improvement, improve ball security (reduce turnovers better passing decisions), offensive and ob play execution, spacing on press break, rebound the ball on the defensive end.

Saturday 2/19/11 at 10:05 a.m. YBA squared off against the Rocktown Ballers. YBA went down early and battled back to capture its first win of the season, CONGRATULATIONS.  Outstanding defense, rebounding at both ends of the floor and outstanding patience, unselfishness and ball movement on offense were the keys to this victory. Keys for improvement from this game: reduce turnovers, come to passes, rebound the ball on the defensive end.

Sunday 2/19/11 at 4:35 p.m. YBA squared off against the Napa Boys and Girls Club.  YBA had great energy early and took an early 5 point lead.  Then our energy left our heads dropped and the effort and hustle declined for the remainder of the game. We stopped movement without the ball and attacking the basket for high percentage baskets reverting back to a steady diet of quick long range shots and not playing as a team (finding the open man) let this one get away.  Keys for improvement from this game: up our intensity, rebound on the defensive end, take higher percentage shots on offense.

Sunday 2/20/11 at 9:00 a.m. - It takes some resolve to play Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.  The reality was 4 of the 5 starters were playing at less than 100%.  Energy not there for 28 minutes. 7th Grade Blue-February 19-20

Our skills are definately "there" as we have made great progress over these last seven weeks. Yet we are still struggling to put a game together from start to finish. While we had a lot of good spurts in all three games we were ultimately unable to be victorious due to our inconsistent play. Our potential is not the question, but rather our ability to execute throughout the entire game. I know we are capable...it's just a matter of time.

7th Grade White-February 19-20

With this tournament closing out our first session we had high hopes and were ready to see our hard work pay off. Unfortunately we haven't figured out how to put together a complete game and do the "little things" necessary to win games. Despite an injury to one player and another battling the flu, a few of us stepped up and gave it their all. Jason played hard and rarely subbed out, Mitch played very well for his first tournament, and I saw a lot of hustle from some of the other players as well. We have a week off to refocus ourselves and when we come back hopefully we are ready to work even harder to get the results we want.

6th Grade Blue-February 19-20

Game#1  
First game we had a slow start. We had to dig ourselves out of a hole. We had a hard time scoring points,but the guys played hard.       

Game #2
We regrouped and came out strong. We played good dedense, good on the ball defense and good help defense. The new guy Josh had a great game.        

Game #3
We came out locked and loaded. This was a great win by over 20 points. This weekends offensive player goes to Jakob H and best hustle goes to Josh

6th Grade White-February 19-20

We had early morning games, with that said the guys got off to a slow start.  After they got warmed up they started playing hard and making things happen.  Matthew was on fire this weekend.  He played hard all weekend.  Roy and Erik Mack were rebounding like crazy.  This weekend the guys played hard and had a few tough losses and a great win.

5th Blue-February 19-20

The guys kicked off another great weekend of play with a tournament Championship, winning all three games for the second straight weekend! 

This weekend, I'd like recognize Matt Schneider, for his leadership and positive attitude.  Without Adam, Jade, or Derek, our group of guys stepped up to the challenge of playing game two with only five players. Diego, Todd, Jackson, Arthur and Matt played more than three quarters before Jade and Derek showed up to finish off the game and lead us to the championship game, where we won! Great job this Winter Session on gradually getting better and learning so much, great job fellas!

4th Grade-February 19-20

What a great finish to the Winter Session.  Our boys played hard all weekend.  We employed a new zone offense and had a few chances to use it and the boys did great.  I’m really encouraged by the development of all the boys. 

In our first game we played the Folsom Force.  This team never gives up and we just couldn’t quite land the knockout blow.  Even though we ended up beating them by 11, they hung around all game.  Overall we played a good aggressive game.  We will need to tighten up our half court defense, but we’ll work on it in the Spring Session.

The final two games were against younger up and coming teams.  We obviously overmatched them with our size and we took advantage of it.  Our bigs did a great job of holding the ball high and not letting the smaller quicker players swipe at it.  I also thought our team did a great job of maintaining their composure.  I told them not to expect a foul as we were playing a younger team.  They did a nice job even though they didn’t get many calls.

Overall another great weekend and a championship to cap it off.  Going forward I will request that we are put in a stronger division if available or play up in the older bracket.  I’d like to really challenge the boys going forward.  Thank for you such a great season.  I look forward to a very bright Spring season starting February 28^th!

3rd Grade- February 19-20

First game was against the 4th grade Folsom Force. Physically, the team was outclassed - theyw ere simply BIGGER! Skill wise, the 3rd graders had them beat.  However, this was one game were physicality outmatched skill.  The team played well, and gave it their all - but came up a little short.

Our second game was against a scrappy 2nd grade 916 Select Team. In a game plagued with fouls and jump balls, the  3rd grade Xtreme team prevailed by two points. They missed many shots, but played great defense and held the 916 Select team off until the final horn sounded.

The last game of the tournament was against an inexperienced 2nd grade Predators team. In a lopsided game, the 3rd grade Xtreme team worked on many things. Most notable was their passing. They were looking up court and finding the open man for the easy shot and basket. The lesson learned was that it's easier to make a basket with noone guarding you than five people guarding you. Extra pass.
Overall, the team played three great games! The coaches are proud of the team and are happy to see the improvment from when they first came together as a team. We are excited to see the kids grow and continue to get better.
